CRA announces simplified way to claim home office expenses
On Dec. 15, 2020, the CRA announced that there would be a simplified process for employees who have been working from home due to COVID to claim home office expenses. If you have worked from home for 50% of the time for at least 4 consecutive weeks, you’re eligible to make this claim.
You can claim $2 per day for any days worked at home during the 4 week period, plus $2 per day for any other days worked at home in 2020 due to COVID-19 to a maximum of $400. No T2200 is required from the employer. If you use this temporary flat rate method though, you cannot claim any other employment expenses, such as motor vehicle expenses.
Do you have more than $400 in expenses? No problem. Use the simplified form T2200S or form T777S and and your list of eligible expenses with receipts to make a detailed claim.
